The birds

So ,life has been nuts around here lately, remodeling the house and just life in general have been keeping me busy. But, I figure it's time to take a few minutes and update my blog. I promised to let you all know how all my pets came to be here , so here is the story of the birds and how they came to live with us.

First was Shula, my male U2 (Umbrella Cockatoo) I found him through an ad in the local paper. I drove down to get him and fell in love immediately. He was a goofball who loved to sing Barney's "I Love You" and dance. He was being tormented by a couple of young boys who liked to poke him with sticks. He has been with my for 12 years and is still able to make me laugh every single day with his antics.

Next came Angel, a female U2. I found her through the same paper. I drove 2 hours to get her and left without her. when I walked in she was taken out of her cage (which was in a dark, damp cellar, in the corner with no light) she immediately tried to attack me. Frankly, she scared me, so I left without her. Halfway home I turned around and went back for her. I could not leave her in that situation, she was getting no attention, was alone all the time and obviously it was turning her into a little terror. I brought her home and she immediately came out of her carrier and took off my daughter's toenail. Then went right up to my husband and sat on his shoulder, Love at first sight. It took me 4 years of patience and love to draw her out and get her to trust me, but in the end I won her over. She has been with us for 11 years.

After that Wizzer came to live with us. He was living with a bunch of college kids who blew pot smoke in his face and gave him beer. He is a goffin Cockatoo and is the friendliest little guy you'd ever want to meet. He has been here for 10 years.

Baby is a Yellow Nape Amazon who came to us through a pet store. She had been there since she was 4 weeks old and had never seen the outside of a cage. She was hand shy and had no idea how to interact with people. When the store closed down she was going to go to a shelter, I convinced the owner to allow her to come home with me, she had been here 8 years and has been with us another 8. She is still hand shy, will only come out on her own, but we can now hold her once she is out.

Buddy is a Eclectus who was given to us by a friend. He had been his mother's bird and when she passed he did not want him to go to a home that knew nothing about birds or to a shelter , so he asked us to take him. buddy has been with us for a year and is the littlest of the parrots, but has the biggest mouth and is the most mischievous. He is the instigator of the bunch for sure.

Bo, Marley, Chico and Toby came to us through woman who contacted me when she was given my name by a vet who knew I would take in birds who needed a home. They were living in a camper with 18 other birds. It was overcrowded, they were in poor condition, needed some fattening up and some grooming of their beaks and nails. They are all slowly coming out of their shells and are getting healthier by the day. They have been with us for 2 months now and are fitting right in.
